How to use Google Trends for Keyword Research

Hello good people!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; SEO is 95% about keyword research.

There are many tools out there to help you do keyword research. From the Google Keyword Tool to the pretty good Freshkeys tool that I love to use, and lots in between.

One tool that many people overlook though is Google Trends.

Google Trends is a free tool from Google that shows you the trends of any given keyword over time. More specifically, it shows you how often your phrase was searched for, over a given period of time.

Why is this important? Many reasons. It’s great for market research. Is it smart to optimize for a keyword that is getting less and less search volume? Probably not, and Google Trends will show you that.

Is your keyword seasonal? Google trends will tell you that too.

Is your keyword relatively new? Google trends can show you that as well.

There’s just a lot of benefit from seeing the search volume over time for any given keyword. And any information you can get to lift the fog of keyword research is something you want to grab hold of.

I suggest you run each of you main 10-20 keywords through Google trends and just look at the chart. You can type in multiple keywords, separated by commas. So it’s easy to type in all your main keywords and see what comes up.

You might notice one of the keywords trending down dramatically against all your other keywords. In that case, it might be time to replace that keyword. You might see one keyword outperforming all your others, but you might not have really focused on that keyword too much. Well, now you would start putting more focus on that keyword.

I could go on and on with different examples. Basically just head over to Google Trends and play around with it for a while. Things will jump out at you really quickly.

And it’s free…which you just can’t beat.
